accessibility
Here you will find all information on accessibility, in particular on the European national laws that will come into force on June 28, 2025.
❓ What is the Accessibility Enhancement Act (BFSG)?
The BFSG is a German law (called the "Barrierefreiheitsgesetz" in Austria) based on the EU directive on accessibility requirements for products and services (European Accessibility Act). Its aim is to give people with disabilities equal access to digital offerings (e.g., websites, apps, e-commerce).
📅 When does the law come into effect?
The law will come into effect on June 28, 2025. From this date onwards, new products and services that fall under the BFSG must be accessible.
👥 Who does the BFSG apply to?
The law is primarily aimed at private companies that offer digital services or products such as:
-
Websites or online shops,
-
mobile apps,
-
Self-service terminals (e.g., ticket machines),
-
e-books,
-
banking services
Small businesses with fewer than 10 employees and annual sales of less than €2 million are exempt from this obligation, but should also ensure accessibility.
📐 What exactly does "barrier-free" mean?
Digital accessibility includes, among other things:
-
Screen readability for screen readers
-
Contrasts & font sizes
-
No flashing elements
-
Structured content with headings and alternative text
Guidance is provided by standard EN 301 549 and the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1, conformance level AA.
Are hello again apps designed to be accessible?
hello again apps are fundamentally accessible. If content such as websites (e.g., online shops) or PDFs are integrated into the app, then the website operator or creator of the PDFs must ensure that this content is accessible.
If your customers report any barriers, please let us know via the Help Center.
📃 Do I need an accessibility statement, and what must it contain?
If a service or product falls under the applicability of the Accessibility Act, an accessibility statement is also required. This statement must be easy to find and itself accessible. For hello again apps, this statement is linked on the registration and login page.
Contents:
- a general description of the service in an accessible format;
- Descriptions and explanations necessary for understanding the performance of the service;
- a description of how the service meets the relevant accessibility requirements listed in the statutory order to be issued pursuantto Section 3 (2);
- the name of the competent market surveillance authority.
For hello again apps, a sample accessibility statement is pre-generated in the dashboard under the customer menu in the "Legal" tab, which can also be further refined (e.g., more precise description of the service provided within the app).

What happens when a barrier is reported?
First, you can always report any existing barrier that complies with WCAG Level AA that is reported to you to us via the Help Center.
If a barrier is reported to the competent market surveillance authority and non-compliance is established, the authority will request the service provider to correct the formal non-compliance within a reasonable period of time. If you receive such a request, please forward it to us immediately so that we can check whether we can remove this barrier.
If you fail to take action in response to a non-compliance report, fines of up to €100,000 may be imposed.
